Join us as Luxmuralis returns to Durham Cathedral later this year with a different show, ‘Science’Experience dazzling projections of elements, DNA and the minds of the greatest scientists in history as you journey through the cathedral.

What is Science by Luxmuralis?

Science is a light and sound art installation created by artistic collaboration ‘Luxmuralis’. The experience will take visitors on an exploration through elements, molecules, DNA, and the minds of the greatest scientists in history.

Dazzling projections on Durham Cathedral’s centuries-old architecture will delve into chemistry and biology, exploring the history of science and how it has contributed to humanity and its understanding of the world.

The artwork also examines the link between science and religion, exploring the wisdom and beauty of both, while music will fill the cathedral to invigorate the senses.

Luxmuralis has been touring cathedrals in England for several years, but Durham Cathedral was the first to host their artwork in the North East.

About the experience

In an experience lasting about 45 minutes, visitors will enter the cathedral in darkness through the North Door and journey down the side aisle of the cathedral, encountering vibrant projections , accompanied by an immersive soundscape.

Heading through the Quire and then up towards the south aisle visitors will be surrounded by projections as they journey through the history and discoveries of the scientific world, encountering different projections in different parts of the cathedral. Because there are a few steps to access the Chapel of the Nine Altars at the far east end of the cathedral, visitors unable to navigate the steps could purchase a ticket at a reduced price, reflecting the difference in their experience.

The experience includes an an awe-inspiring projection in the Nave, the central aisle of the cathedral. The space will be clear of pews, and visitors can use the seating at the sides to take a moment to pause as the cathedral’s soaring columns are transformed by images of DNA, elements and molecules.

New for 2023, the journey will take visitors out into the Cloisters where more projections will explore Chemistry and Biology across the stone arches of the medieval courtyard before leading people into the Chapter House, where the domed ceiling will also play host to a dazzling scientific display of light and sound.
