Food and Drink

Prince Bishops is home to a large Costa, open for sit-in and take away coffees, light bites, pastries and cakes.

For a continental menu of mouth-watering treats, make sure to try Patisserie Valerie which is great for breakfasts, lunches and more.

Meanwhile, The Picnic Basket is Durham’s oldest independent sandwich shop. Its speciality sandwiches are legendary in the city and they’re a great option if you’re on the go. You can also pick up artisan coffees, breakfast baps and homemade cakes to take away.

For some of the best cocktails in the city, head down to the river level, just outside the car park, for a drink with a view at Whisky River. Open until 11.30pm, its prime location overlooking the River Wear makes it a great spot for people watching.

Make sure to visit the Discovering Durham, Durham Distillery and Elvet & Bailey stores, where you can pick up everything from chutney and locally-distilled gin to fused-glass ornaments, woodwork and watercolours.

Prince Bishops is also a participant in many of Durham’s art events, whether it’s hosting a thought-provoking light installation at Lumiere or an ice sculpture for the annual Fire & Ice In Durham spectacular.

Umbrella Street, which sees one side of the shopping precinct festooned with colourful umbrellas, is an ideal Instagram spot, whilst also raising vital funds for charity.

Easy Parking

Parking couldn’t be easier at Prince Bishops which has its own 400-space car park, which is easily accessible, just as you enter the city centre. For drivers with Satellite Navigation, the postcode is DH1 3UJ.

It’s an award-winning car park and was first in the region to be awarded a European Parking Award.

The parking includes 22 accessible parking bays located on Level 1, as well as electrical charging points.

Charges start at £2.10 for 0-2 hours or £11.50 for more than six hours. Visit after 6pm and benefit from the night owl tariff which is a £1.50 flat rate until the car park closes at midnight.

You don’t need to worry about losing your ticket as it operates Automatic Number Plate Recognition as soon as you drive up to the barrier, so all you need remember is your licence plate to pay on exit.
