Paddington Bear™ unveiled as the first ice sculpture in the storybook line-up at Fire&Ice InDurham

BREAKING NEWS… Today we have unveiled the first ice sculpture in our line-up for Fire&Ice InDurham 2018.
As you know, the event is now in its third iteration and takes place across the City on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th February, following the theme of Literary Characters, with lots of famous faces featured.
So much so, we’re absolutely thrilled to be able to tell you that the first ice sculpture at Fire&Ice InDurham 2018 will be the one and only Paddington Bear. A much-loved favourite for so many, who transcends the generations, he’s sure to be a big draw to the event.
Paddington Bear™ – created by author Michael Bond – will make his debut in Durham, complete with his duffle coat, old bush hat and battered suitcase – as the characteristics of this much-loved children’s favourite will be captured in icy form following the original artwork of illustrator, Peggy Fortnum.
The character first appeared in 1958 in the children’s book, A Bear Called Paddington, which means the brand will be celebrating 60 years this year, adding an even further cause for celebration during the hotly anticipated event.
In fact, since making his first appearance in children’s literature, Paddington has featured in more than 50 book titles. He really is an all-time classic and a firm favourite with families up and down the country.
So, as if Fire&Ice InDurham wasn’t enough for people to enjoy, having Paddington join us in our line-up of storybook characters following the literary theme is even more reason to come into the City during the course of the weekend, to celebrate this special anniversary in icy style!
Of course, while we’re excited to let you know about Paddington’s arrival in the City and the brand’s landmark milestone, we’re still working hard to finalise the remaining nine ice sculptures.
We’re making an announcement later this week about the icy storybook characters people can see, along with full timings of the different elements of the event, so please do keep checking on our website and social media channels for all the very latest, event-official information.
What do you think? Are you excited to see Paddington Bear? Which other storybook character ice sculptures do you hope to see at Fire&Ice InDurham this year? One thing is for sure… if you’re looking for things to do in Durham this half term break with the family, make sure you pay a visit to Fire&Ice InDurham 2018 before the sculptures all melt away!
