Fire&Ice InDurham is back!

You asked and we’ve delivered!  Building on the huge success that was Fire&Ice InDurham last year, we’re delighted to tell you that the festival is making a come-back to the City this February half term.  So if you’re looking for things to do in Durham with children, then this one is for you (not forgetting the big kids at heart too…).
On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February, Fire&Ice InDurham will see the City come to life, with an ice sculpture trail lit by flaming beacons weaving its way through the streets of Durham.  Not only this, but you’ll be able to watch live ice carving demonstrations, and have a chance to turn your hand to the craft yourself, before seeing the festivities conclude with a grand finale show in the Market Place.
This year, the theme of Fire&Ice InDurham takes on the tales of infamous myths and legends, with nine different carefully hand-carved ice sculptures depicting some of the regions most loved stories, like the Lambton Worm and St Cuthbert’s Mist, across the City. You’ll also be able to enjoy carvings of other mythical creatures from popular tales of times gone by, such as mermaids, dragons and trolls – and many, many more!
It’s been 12 months in the planning but the time it’s taken is well worth it, given the enjoyment it brings to our visitors and we can wait to welcome you into the City for Fire&Ice InDurham very, very soon. As well as ice carvings to marvel and demonstrations to enjoy, the event in Durham gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the heart of the action, through a series of interactive ice sculptures…
Make sure you pack your selfie-stick as this is one you won’t want to miss! During the festival you’re going to be able to sit on a grand throne and stand in front of a pair of intricate Griffin wings – all made of ice juxtaposed against the backdrop of flaming beacons – while becoming part of the sculpture too. How cool (or should we say flaming hot – given the name of our event in Durham?) will they look posted later on Facebook?!
The much loved ‘ice melt’ is also making a comeback to the City, with bars of chocolate frozen into a block of ice, meaning you need to find a way to melt away the layers to claim your sweet treat. But no cheating – someone actually went away and came back with a mini toolkit last year to help get to the chocolate faster!  The ice melt competition is also returning – sponsored by Moon Jewellery on Silver Street – where you have to guess what time the ice will melt over the course of the weekend in order to win a prize. It’s all part of making Fire&Ice InDurham an interactive experience for all the family to enjoy – there’s really something for everyone – even Game of Thrones fans!
Not many people actually know, but all of the sculptures you’ll see during the course of the weekend will have been carefully created by the team at Glacial Arts in gigantic freezers over a 24-hour period, and they’re the people behind some of the ice work on the popular TV show, Game of Thrones.  As well as myths and legends, we’ve a little bit of showbiz coming to Durham City too!
So stay tuned for more information about what’s happening and when across the City as part of Fire&Ice InDurham – we’ll be sharing the itinerary on our blog and social media channels too.  Until then, we just wanted to let you know so that if you’re thinking about what’s on in Durham this half term, Fire &Ice InDurham is top of your to-do list.  See you there!
